Iran played against Syria in the last Round of 16 match of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on 31 January 2024. The match kicked off at 7 pm.
Iran's Mehdi Taremi successfully converts a penalty into a goal in the 34th minute, taking the lead to 1-0.
In the match's second half, Syria' Omar Khrbin scores a goal in the 64th minute, equalizing the score to 1-1 at full-time.
Extra time was awarded to the match, however no goals were made in the first and second half.
The match proceeded to a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner. Iran's Karim Ansarifard, Ramin Rezaeian, Omid Ebrahimi, Mehdi Torabi, and Ehsan Hajisafi scored 5 goals in the penalty shoot-out while Syria scored 3 goals from Pablo Sabbag, Aiham Ousou, and Alaa Al Dali.
Iran won the match with a score of 5-3 in the penalty shoot-out and secured their spot in the Quarter-Finals.
