Progress made in resolving Saudi-led boycott of Qatar: Kuwaiti Foreign Minister

Kuwaiti's Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Sabah has stated, earlier today, that there have been “constructive and fruitful discussions” on the efforts to achieve reconciliation between Qatar and its neighbouring countries - Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain - in the Gulf crisis. He said that there had been progress in resolving the blockade on Qatar. He, however, did stop short of announcing any breakthrough in the dispute, according to Al Jazeera.

In a statement read out by Al-Sabah on Kuwait TV, he said:

“Fruitful discussion have taken place recently in which all sides expressed their keenness … to reach a final agreement (Al Jazeera)."

The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister also thanked the White House senior adviser Jared Kushner for his “recent efforts” in trying to negotiate between the blockading countries on his recent visit to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

After the statement, The Qataris Foreign Minister His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani thanked Kuwait for its mediation on his Twitter page:

According to Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara:

“A Gulf summit expected to take place next week is going to be a good occasion for Kuwait to introduce the new agreement between Qatar and the other Gulf countries (Al Jazeera).”

Bishara also believed that Kushner did not really add much to the resolution of the GCC Crisis, despite his recent visit to the Gulf. He said:

“Clearly, he came too late in the game and he left too early in the sense that he came to get some credit, but it didn’t really work out because everyone understands that Qataris and Saudis did most of the work and Kuwait of course has been mediating this crisis for years,” he said.
“Kushner actually played an important role in the crisis itself. According to former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Kushner knew when he was in Saudi Arabia during the meeting between Trump and his Gulf allies that something was cooking against Qatar and he remained silent. He didn’t even tell his own secretary of state (Al Jazeera).”

This was the first time that Kuwait, since it began mediating between its Gulf neighbours to end the rift, has issued a statement like this on its state TV channel.

Earlier today, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani also said that though there was movement towards ending the dispute, he still was unable to predict whether

"a breakthrough was imminent or would fully resolve the matter (Al Jazeera)."

His Excellency also added, as reported by the Qatar Tribune:

"Any solution to the Gulf crisis must be a comprehensive solution that preserves the unity of the Gulf. We are optimistic about a solution to the Gulf crisis, and we cannot say that all problems will be solved in one day.
"Our relationship with the United States is strategic, and we will work to strengthen it with the new administration. We encourage the United States to enter into negotiations with Iran to achieve stability in the region."
