His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has been named the Amir of Kuwait after the passing of the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti government said on Tuesday.
In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Anas Al-Saleh, on behalf of the Cabinet, prayed for mercy on the soul of the deceased. The Cabinet prays for the success of the new ruler in his efforts to ensure the security and growth of the country, added the statement.
The Cabinet said that the late Amir died in the United States at 16:00 (Kuwait time), adding that the late Amir's passing follows a "glorious legacy of sacrifice, generosity, accomplishments and commitment to principles and ideals in the service of his country and Arab and Islamic nations.
The statement went on to mention that Sheikh Sabah was known to have "stood in support of justice, peace and human dignity, wherever that may have been.
"With his passing, Kuwait, the Arab and Islamic regions and humanity as a whole, have lost a distinguished icon," the statement said.
The late ruler made "unforgettable contributions" in support of humanity, and is responsible for envisaging a new school of thought in diplomacy, it added.
The Cabinet prays for the success of the new ruler in his efforts to ensure the security and growth of the country, added the statement.
The Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs announced an official 40 days of mourning and an official three-day holiday starting Tuesday following passing away of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
