The environmental section in the Protection & Wildlife Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment revealed that the first hatching of the endangered hawksbill sea turtles was recorded at Fuwairit Beach, coinciding with World Environment Day being celebrated this year under the slogan Generation Restoration.
Under the direct oversight of the head of the department Mr. Taleb Khaled Al-Shahwani, the team recorded the data and released 53 hawksbill sea turtle that returned to the sea under full safety measures for the team. So far, 92 nests were moved to the protected site at Fuwairit Beach.
The project to protect the endangered hawksbill sea turtles is being undertaken by the Environmental Science Center at Qatar University under the supervision of the MME with funding from Qatar Petroleum. The project covers Qatar’s northeastern beaches (Ras Laffan, Jassassiya, Maroona, Fuwairit and Al-Mfier).
