1. Monstera

Popularly known as "Swiss Cheese plants" because of its natural leaf holes, Monsteras are one of the top picks of houseplant enthusiasts. Among its varieties, Monstera Deliciosa and Monstera Adansonii are the most ubiquitous. The big slotted leaves of Monstera Deliciosa can instantly give off a "tropical" ambiance to your room. For many, the variegated versions of Deliciosa are even more alluring because of the white splashes on the leaves. The variegated monsteras are quite hard to find in Qatar, though. For those that prefer smaller leaves, the Monstera Adansonii is the perfect alternative. While Monstera has air purifying ability, it can be toxic to cats and dogs.

How to care:

  • Light: bright to medium indirect light
  • Water: Weekly; allow the soil to dry out between watering
  • Temperature: 18°C-30°C

2. Calathea

Unlike the Monstera, Calathea varieties are known to be pet-friendly. Its two-tone leaves and patterns make it an eye-catching addition to any room. Along with Maranta, Calathea is known as a "prayer plant" because its leaves fold up at night. Of the different varieties of Calathea, you can find the silver-tinged Orbifolia, pin-striped Ornata, darker Makoyana, and Roseopicta with its pinkish stripes and purplish undersides.

How to care:

  • Light: medium to bright indirect light, can tolerate low indirect light.
  • Water: Every 1 to 2 weeks

3. Ficus elastica (Rubber plant)

What makes the Rubber plant a famous ornamental houseplant is its shiny leathery foliage. The variegated ones especially make a statement with its leaves that look like it was painted on. You can get the Tineke and Ruby in nurseries and plant shops in Qatar. However, these need more bright light compared to the solid colored ones. Minimalists prefer the solid green of Robusta and the darker green foliage of Decora. An added benefit to its look is the Rubber plant's air purifying ability. However, its sap is unsafe for pets and children.

How to care:

  • Light: medium to bright indirect light, some can tolerate bright direct light
  • Water: Every 1 to 2 weeks, allow the soil to dry out between watering

4. String succulents

For indoor hanging plants, String of Pearls and String of Hearts seems to be the most in-demand in the country nowadays. Both are pretty low maintenance which makes it attractive to beginners.
