Roads To World Cup Stadiums

The President of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Dr. Eng. Saad bin Ahmed Al Muhannadi affirmed that the Authority is working on full swing to complete all infrastructure work for the roads leading to the World Cup stadiums before the start of the championship by about two years.

In 2017, Ashghal has implemented the Lusail Expressway, which will directly serve Lusail Stadium where the masses can go from Doha to the stadium in a short time, he explained.

He added that Ashghal has also completed the implementation of Al Shamal road improvements project in 2017, which will also facilitate access to the Lusail Stadium for those coming from the north and the western regions. He pointed out that Ashghal is working on the completion of Al Khor Expressway by the end of 2019, which is directly connected to the Lusail Stadium and links the northern and eastern regions, in addition, it's linked to the Orbital Road, which facilitates the trip to the stadium from the southern and western regions.

The Lusail Expressway project is one of the most important projects of the Ashghal's highway program. It is located in a vital area linking Doha with Lusail City. It connects many public destinations such as the Pearl, Katara, the Diplomatic area, and a large number of residential neighborhoods, hotels, commercial complexes, and other facilities as well as the Lusail Stadium.

The design focuses on enhancing pedestrian traffic safety and healthy lifestyles by establishing a total of 13 kilometers of separate pedestrian and bicycle paths, as well as a large number of service Roadways to link various destinations to the highway.

It also features one of the most important architectural landmarks in Doha the 5/6 cross arcs, which was inaugurated on Dec 16, 2017, and embodies an icon of creativity and engineering achievement.

The 5/6 cross arcs are the largest and longest in Qatar with a height of 100 meters, a width of 147 meters, and weighing more than 9300 tons of iron.

The huge drilling, the tunnels construction, multi-level bridges included in the project, and the construction of the two water bridges, all have been implemented without stopping the traffic. The project also included the implementation of the integrated six kilometers tunnels for to accommodate electricity networks and water drainage systems, to allow any future maintenance without drilling, in addition to the construction of a subway tunnel underground that will pass under the water bridge.

More than 75,000 tons of iron and more than 345,000 tons of asphalt have been used in the project, with the participation of more than 4,000 workers.

Lusail Expressway design is an integrated system that provides traffic and connectivity between Doha and the West Bay to enhance access to the region's important destinations and landmarks.
