The data of the Planning and Statistics Authority showed that the number of building permits issued by the various municipalities in Qatar reached 271 permits during the month of May, a decrease of 44 percent from the previous month (April 2020), which witnessed the registration of 483 permits. In its statement issued today, the Authority said that comparing the number of permits issued in May 2020 with those issued in the previous month a general decrease of 44 percent is noted. The decrease was noted in the majority of the municipalities: Al Rayyan (56 percent), Al Doha (55 percent), Al Shammal and Al Wakrah (50 percent) each, Al Khor (39 percent), Al Da'ayen (26 percent), Um salal (3 percent), On the other hand, there was a clear increase in the municipality of Al Sheehaniya (200) percent.
Building permits and building completion certificates data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.
In a quick review of the data on building permits issued during the month of May 2020, according to their geographical distribution, the municipality of Al Rayyan comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building permits issued were 57 permits, (21 percent) of the total issued permits, while municipality of Al Doha came in second place with 54 permits, (20 percent), followed by Al Wakrah municipality with 51 permits, (19 percent), then municipality of Al Da'ayen with 43 permits, (16 percent). The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Umm Slal 32 permits (12 percent), Al Sheehaniya 15 permits (6 percent), Al Khor 14 permits (5 percent), and finally Al Shammal 5 permits (2 percent). In terms of type of permits issued, data indicates that the new building permits (residential and non-residential) constitutes 57 percent (154 permits) of the total building permits issued during the month of May 2020, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 42 percent (115 permits), and finally fencing permits with 1 percent (2 permits).
By analyzing new residential buildings permits data, we find that villas top the list, accounting for 65 percent (75 permits) of all new residential buildings permits, followed by dwellings of housing loans permits by 21 percent (24 permits) and apartments buildings by 10 percent (11 permits). On the other hand, commercial buildings were found to be in the forefront of non-residential buildings permits with 49 percent (19 permits), followed by industrial buildings e.g. workshops and factories with 28 percent (11 permits), then governmental buildings with 15 percent (6 permits).
With regard to building completion certificates, the
Planning and Statistics Authority data indicate that during May, the
municipalities issued only 158 certificates, with a general decline of
39 percent from the previous month of April, which witnessed the
registration of 260 certificates. According to the geographical distribution, Al Rayyan
municipality comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of
building completion certificates issued were 58 certificates, (37
percent) of the total issued certificates, while municipality of Al
Wakrah came in second place with 34 certificates, (22 percent), followed
by municipality of Al Doha with 25 certificates (16 percent), then Al
Daayen municipality with 20 certificates, (13 percent). The rest of the
municipalities were as follows: Umm Slal 9 certificates (6 percent), Al
Sheehaniya 7 certificates (4 percent), Al khor 4 certificates (3
percent), Al Shammal 1 certificate (1 percent).
