Mowasalat expects to complete the selection process for the second taxi operator in the country by the end of June, a senior official of the company said yesterday. The company recently invited bids from companies that are interested in operating the service, as the sector has been opened for competition. Four public shareholding companies have registered in response to the invitation. The companies are Doha Insurance, Al Khaleej Insurance, First Finance and National Leasing Company. “Tomorrow we will be holding a meeting with representatives of these companies to explain to them the details of the service as well as the requirements they need to fulfill to win the bid. One company will be selected at the end of the process depending on its competence to operate the service,” Business Development Director Ahmed Al Ansari (pictured) told The Peninsula yesterday. If all the companies are found equally qualified, the bidding amount might become crucial in the selection process, he hinted. Mowasalat will continue to operate its fleet of Karwa buses and taxis while allowing the second operator to run the taxis. The new company will operate 500 taxis initially. However, the service will be monitored by Mowasalat, which will also fix the tariffs. “We expect the new company will go operational by the end of this year or early next year,” said Al Ansari. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=May2009&file=Local_News2009051962014.xml
