Mrs. Haruhi Otsuka, the wife of Ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar Seiichi Otsuka, recently hosted a Japanese cultural event during the monthly SOHOM (Spouses of Heads of Mission) meeting at the Ambassador’s residence.

Mrs. Otuska invited many Qatari ladies with the intention to develop better understanding and to deepen the strong relationship between Japan and Qatar along with those countries affiliated with SOHOM. The meeting included Japanese Calligraphy ‘Shodo’ and the traditional attire ‘Kimono and Obi (belt)’ under the theme of “One Spring Day”. All the guests were asked to dress up with something pink or yellow. These are the symbolic colors in the spring time in Japan based on ‘Sakura’ (Cherry blossom) and ‘Na-no-Hana’ (Rape blossom). The Event was attended by over 80 women of VIPs, wives of Ambassadors and Qatar residents from the Middle East.

In the event, Mrs. Akiho Kobayashi demonstrated Japanese Calligraphy ‘Shodo’ by introducingthe traditional materials such as brush and ink and the process of making ink as the important step to reach inner silence before starting to write. The guests requested their favorite words to be written on the ‘Kakejiku’ (hanging scroll). Her tranquil performance and magnificent ‘Shodo’ mesmerized the audience.

The event was followed by an authentic ‘Kimono’ show volunteered by Japanese ladies of Doha Kimono Club. The elegant and colorful Kimonos were presented one after another accompanied by the music ‘Stand Alone’ which was written by world-renowned composer, Joe Hisaishi. In the show, Mrs. Chiho Funeno who leads the club neatly shaped the flower in the shape of ‘Sakura’ (Cherry blossom) with beautiful weaved Obi belt after the theme “One Spring day”.

Mrs. Otsuka said “I want to create an opportunity to share the exciting moment through Japanese culture with Qatari ladies, ladies from the Middle East and diplomats’ wives together.”

The show created great excitement among the audience. They were also delighted with the gifts ‘Shikishi’ (Japanese traditional special card) written their names on in Japanese by ‘Shodo’ master.
