BOYA is a high-quality condenser microphones brand and is a well-known manufacturer of electro-acoustic products. They have dozens of microphones, mainly for GoPro, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Samsung, Lycra, and other international brands of digital SLR cameras and Camcorders, and also for iPhone, Ipad, and iPod touch. (BOYA)

Let's dive right into the review of the BOYA BY-PM500 USB Microphone, so you understand why it's a 'Level Up' in the tech accessories industry!

Let's unbox the BOYA BY-PM500 USB Microphone!

After my recent review of the Pwnage Ultra Custom Optical Wireless Gaming Mouse, here I am again reviewing a new tech for this month, what is it you ask? It's a mic! Yes, you heard it right (see what I did there?), it's a microphone - the BOYA BY-PM500 USB Microphone to be precise. Some might wonder why do I need to spend money on a mic if I'm not in that line of work?

Let me explain, apart from using it for your streaming and podcast needs, you can make your online meetings much more professional with an external mic. Also, with new social media platforms like Clubhouse and Spotify GreenRoom increasing in popularity, you might want to consider buying this one! Let's get straight to all the details about this amazing mic!

In the box:

What's in the box?

The mic comes with a Type-C to USB-A cable (to connect to PC/Laptop) along with Type-C to Type-C (to connect to android phones) and a tabletop mic stand.

Materials & construction:

Sturdy and durable mic.

The mic body is made of a mixture of metal and hard plastic which feels sturdy and durable. It comes with a metal tabletop stand which is enough for a small setup. The stand also has a soft bottom material that allows you to move the mic while recording without making much noise. If you want to upgrade, the mic can be removed from the default stand and used with a bracket to cope with different complex setups.

Weight:

What do you think of the weight of this mic?

It is definitely on the heavy side, weighing at 703g (24.8oz) with its stand but since you won't be moving it much, its weight shouldn't be an issue. Also, I would argue that the weight of the mic makes it feel strong.

Buttons and controls:

2 volume styles to choose from.

The front of the mic has a dial for the volume control which also doubles as a quick mute button. Along with it is a button to change the polar patterns of the mic. There are 2 styles to choose from: Cardioid and Omnidirectional polar patterns.

What is the difference between Cardioid and Omnidirectional polar patterns?

The Omnidirectional polar pattern is a perfect choice for when you want to capture sounds from all directions, for example, this is great when you are recording a podcast with a couple of friends.

On the contrary, if you are trying to sing/record a solo voice, it is better to switch to Cardioid polar pattern as it will highlight the sound from one direction.

Connectivity:

This device can be connected to only android phones that support Type-C cable.

This is one of the best features of this mic as it requires no batteries of any sort for you to use it. You simply have to plug the wire into your computer and start using your mic. These days it's really hard to find a device that does not need external charging for its ”smart controls”. Another great part is that this can be connected to your phone as well to be used as a phone-mic.

Note: This device can be connected to only android phones that support Type-C cable. And the mic cannot be connected to iOS devices.

Quality:

It's all about the audio!

The most important thing about a mic is its audio quality, coming from BOYA, this mic nails the audio quality by making it sound crystal clear in both modes. It shines mainly in the Cardioid mode where the noise around you is well reduced and it produces a rich clear sound which is perfect for most situations. The other mode does not fail as well when you need your mic to pick up sound from all directions.

There is a nifty headphone jack in the mic itself using which the audio can be monitored directly from the mic using a wired headphone with zero latency to check what you sound like before you start recording.

Final thoughts

The new BOYA BY-PM500 mic: A tech enthusiast's review
What do you think about this new mic?

The mic is really useful and it sounds amazing for its price range. As I said in the beginning, an external mic is not just for a streamer or podcast producer.

In this day and age, we are moving towards an audio-driven social media where everyone has a voice and with the right tool yours can be clear to everyone.

Pros

  • Well built
  • No external batteries required
  • Competitively priced
  • Detachable stand
  • Great sound quality

Cons

  • The volume control dial does not have a stopping position
