Qatar's Minister of Administrative Development, Labour & Social Affairs and Labour His Excellency Yousuf Mohamed Al Othman Fakhroo met recently with Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) deputy administrator Arnell Ignacio to discuss Qatar's need of more Filipino skilled workers who are eyed to meet the manpower demands of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2022.
"We always look at enhancing and building a better team of multinational men who are willing to happily support Qatar's road to sustainability and later on, to 2022,” His Excellency shared.
He also added that the hiring of more Filipino workers are already underway. “The workers’ welfare is our top priority”
Meanwhile, the OWWA delegate expressed his joy over Qatar and The Philippines' further bolstered ties by saying: “This is a very exciting news for our Kababayans. Qatar is waiting for you!”
It can be remembered that earlier this year, the ever-controversial Kafala system has been scrapped as well as the Exit Permit policy.
According to Minister Fakhroo, more labour reforms are set to take place soon—including the opening of a Qatar VISA Center in Manila in the first quarter of 2019.
Recent estimates are saying that around 260,000 Filipinos live in Qatar. As of early 2017, Filipinos are estimated to be the fourth-largest group of foreign workers in the Gulf state, after Indians, Nepalis and Bangladeshis.
