Doha,April,12:At least one person was killed and 23 others were injured in a major road accident close to the signals near Ras Abu Aboud overbridge on the Corniche road yesterday afternoon . The deceased has been identified as an employee of the Doha Marriott Hotel. A statement issued by the hotel late in the evening said two buses carrying employees were involved in an accident resulting in at least one employee’s death. There was a pile-up of more vehicles in the accident but it was not known if the occupants of these were among those injured. Unconfirmed reports, quoting a Hamad hospital source, put the death toll at three. The incident occurred barely 200m from the exit of the Doha International Airport’s arrival terminal. The victim was said to be a Sri Lankan expatriate. Eyewitnesses said a four-wheel drive caught fire in the impact of the crash. But there was no information about the fate of its occupants. Quoting a witness, a social news network site said the Nissan Patrol was sandwiched between a Coaster and a mini-van. Soon after the accident, fire engines and ambulances were rushed to the spot. Some of the injured were attended to by the emergency medical service personnel at the accident site. Soon after the accident, traffic was diverted to different roads. The Doha Marriott Hotel statement added: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the employee who was killed and all others (who were) injured in this accident. The police are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident. We are doing what we can to assist our employees and their families through this tragedy.
