The Regatta Sailing Academy was established in 1996 and since then has only continued to grow. Originally based at the Sheraton Grand Doha hotel, then the InterContinental Doha hotel in 2006, the Academy is now based in Katara Cultural Village with an additional base at the Four Seasons Marina, where its two racing yachts are moored.

According to the Regatta Sailing Academy’s website, “Regatta Sailing Academy is one of Qatar’s longest running sporting ventures and has a busy future ahead.” With a wide range of activities offered and a staff of highly skilled and highly experienced RYA instructors, the Regatta Sailing Academy is a great place to spend a day!

Recently, the ILQ team visited the Academy to set sail on an adventure of a lifetime! We arrived inexperienced and left skilled and knowledgeable of how to navigate safely on our own in the open water. We quickly learned and, much to our surprise, it was easy to get the hang of how to sail. With the help of our instructors, our confidence as beginner sailors kept growing! After a fun-filled, safe day out on the water, we left the Regatta Sailing Academy eager to return to sail again and to try out the other activities they offer.

From sailing to keelboating, yachting to power boating, the Regatta Sailing Academy has it all and teaches it all! Starting at age 6, they offer beginner sailing to teach the basics and expose students to the freeing feeling of sailing. They also teach shore-based theory courses, which are part of the internationally recognized RYA Yachtmaster Program, to help individuals achieve their certificates. Finally, they teach power-boating and certify people – as it’s now a legal requirement to have a certificate to drive a power-boat in Qatar.

Along with teaching, the Academy does races and offers boat hires for people who can already sail, or have completed their courses with the Academy, but just want to be out on the water! Finally, they make trips up to Al Khor and round trip International Award Adventures to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Bahrain.

With a wide range of activities offered, below is a breakdown of courses and costs to ensure you have the best experience possible:

  • Junior sailing (age 6+): eight-week course at 1.5 hours every week = QR 950
  • Adult learn-to-sail: five weeks of lessons at 3 hours every week = QR 1,800
  • Boat hire: prices vary between QR 100-200 per hour depending on the style of boat
  • Membership: entitles members to free boat hire and 10% discount off courses

When asked how popular sailing is in Doha, Simon Kearns, our instructor was excited. “Sailing in Doha is very popular,” he said. “We often have 50+ people out on the water on Fridays and Saturdays, and around 30+ children and others most weekdays – largely because it’s the best sport in the world.”

With sailing being a popular sport and numerous people visiting the academy to learn and take part in their own sailing adventure, be sure to visit the Regatta Sailing Academy to experience for yourself just how fun and freeing it is to be out on the water!
