Here’s what’s happened since last week’s updates: UAE offers to join Qatar in co-hosting World Cup 2022

Football fans on social media are calling on FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to punish the UAE after Emirati fans pelted Qatari players with shoes and bottles during the Asian Cup semi-final. Videos and images of the scene quickly went viral on social media sparking outrage among both Qatari fans and others, reported Al Jazeera.

Shoes and bottles were thrown at Qatar players by fans as ugly scenes marked United Arab Emirates' exit from the Asian Cup at the semi-final stage.

The incidents occurred as the Qataris celebrated their goals in a stunning 4-0 upset win over the tournament hosts in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Many called for the UAE to be punished for setting the tone for the crowd's behaviour and for its failure to protect the Qatari team. Qatar fan Arwa al-Mansoori said football governing body FIFA and the AFC had to punish the Emirati authorities for the crowd's behaviour.

In a statement sent to Al Jazeera, the AFC said it was "conducting a thorough investigation into events at the Asian Cup UAE 2019 semi-final between the United Arab Emirates and Qatar."

"Once that investigation has been completed the AFC will decide on the appropriate next steps," it added.

Tension between the two countries has been building in recent months with UAE being among several Arab nations to cut off Qatar over its alleged support for terrorism. UAE fans made their feelings clear even before the match started as they booed the Qatar national anthem.
