Here’s what’s happened since last week’s updates: Saudi Arabia, Qatar to meet at the Asian Cup today
Qatar reiterated its commitment to resolve the crisis that the countries of the blockade have created through dialogue that guarantees sovereignty and put an end to illegal measures. A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, Qatar also renewed its commitment to the mediation of HH the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, expressing appreciation of these efforts, and of the States that supported it, in order to resolve the crisis.
The State of Qatar has also affirmed its clear approach to dealing with the crisis wisely from its inception, in accordance with international law and international mechanisms for conflict resolution.
This came in a statement delivered by HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, at the official meeting of the UN Security Council on "Situation in the Middle East, Including Palestinian Question".
United Arab Emirates sports chief Mohammed Khalfan al-Romaithi said UAE is “open to co-host” the FIFA 2022 world if the rift with Qatar is resolved.
"I think the right way is to solve the problem," Romaithi, who on Monday stood down from Abu Dhabi's Executive Council to focus on a bid to run Asian football, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.
"If the problem is solved I think the UAE would welcome the World Cup here, a group or two for example,” the chairman of the UAE General Sports Authority added.
Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has proposed to expand the 2022 World Cup from 32 to 48 teams and has suggested that neighbouring countries could host matches.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a diplomatic and trade boycott on Qatar in June 2017. The countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which Qatar denies. Since then, Qatar has been facing a sea, air and land blockade. Qatar had to travel via Kuwait to take part in the ongoing Asian Cup taking place in the UAE. There are almost no Qatari fans supporting the team.
