Qatar is a country full of fascinating things to enjoy, and one of them is for visitors to learn about the local culture and do the majlis experience! It is a great way to learn about Qatari warmth and hospitality.
Majlis in the Arabic language means a 'place of sitting'. It forms one of the main parts of the Qatari culture and can be a place for formal or informal social gatherings. In a majlis, people come together to discuss or celebrate special occasions.
In Qatar, it is common to see a majlis as a separate area next to the house or an adjacent room with a separate entrance. For special occasions, tents are erected near the house to host more people. The majlises are also usually segregated for men and women.
During the gatherings in a majlis, gahwa (Arabic coffee) is served. This can be followed by the serving of dates.
The ILoveqatar.net (ILQ) team has listed a few places in Qatar where you can experience what a typical majlis looks like, what happens there and even enjoy some delicious gahwa! Let's go!
