I have lived in the Middle East most of my life, and Qatar for part of it, and can say, without a doubt, that I don’t know a single person who has not complained about hair loss or the deterioration of their hair in some way or the other while living here!
It’s true that if you google it, you can find hair fall solutions, but how many of them specifically cater to hair loss or hair fall solutions in Qatar? Hardly any.
That got me thinking that I need to write a life hacks article on hair fall and how to prevent it while in Qatar, especially since the weather conditions can be rather extreme here, especially in the summer, when temperatures can reach anywhere between 45 – 50 degrees Celsius, and the water in Qatar also seems to be rather unfavourable for the hair, mostly because it’s desalinated and chlorinated. And, then, there’s the air conditioning that we spend most of our days in that can also make the hair dry and more susceptible to falling.
So, here goes!
Summers can be harsh here in Qatar and dry. It doesn’t rain a lot in Qatar, especially in the summer months.
It’s also important to note here that it isn’t just the summer heat or dryness in Qatar that can damage your hair, other reasons for hair loss include lack of vitamins, stress and also an unhealthy lifestyle
It’s very important that you look after your scalp, as well as your hair, because if you have a healthy scalp, half of your hair loss problems are solved. Now, how can you look after that scalp and those locks of yours to ensure you have beautiful, moisturised, strong and healthy hair.
There are a range of different shower filters available in department stores, pharmacies, malls and different shower filter companies in Qatar, and though they may be a little costly depending on which one you choose, it’s a good investment to make to protect your crowning glory. These shower filters help to reduce chlorine quantities and other hair-damaging chemicals found in tap water, so you get to wash your hair and body with filtered water that’s pure from chemicals, and ensure they stay soft and supple.
The most recommended shower filter in Qatar to reduce hair fall is:
The Blu Ionic Shower Filter removes up to 99% of harmful water pollutants, heavy metal ions and chemicals from your shower, which leaves your skin feeling softer, prevents hair loss, hair breakage & reduces dandruff.

A good oil massage goes a long way in making the scalp and hair healthy. The best way to apply oil to your hair is to warm it a little before massaging it into the hair and scalp. There are a number of natural oils you can use from and they are easily available in all leading super markets here in Qatar and even corner shops. You can choose from coconut, amla, olive, or even mustard oil. Massage into your hair and the scalp, for as long as you can and then rinse it out with shampoo and conditioner.
Many women in Qatar swear by the Moroccan Hair Oil and say it's very effective against hair fall.
For added protection of your hair, use a hair mask or henna from time to time. The hair masks and henna are readily available in Doha and help to seal in the necessary hair nutrients along with moisture to make your hair stronger, shinier and prevent it from falling.
After you shampoo your hair, it’s a good habit to also condition your hair with conditioner, to help moisturise it, especially if your hair is dry, damaged or brittle. There are a number of conditioners available in all supermarkets here in Qatar and you can choose one that is based on your hair type or ask your local salon which is the best one to use.
For some extra protection from the heat of Qatar’s summer and also from the hair dryer, applying hair serum or heat protectants that are available in the market can really help to control hair fall and damage.
While the sun in Qatar is one of the reasons for hair fall, the chemicals found in tap water are equally damaging, so even if you have invested in a shower filter, it’s best to avoid washing your hair on a daily basis. This will protect it from the damaging chemicals found in tap water and allow it to stay on your head rather than in your bathtub/shower cubicle or on your home floors!
Since hair is mostly made up of proteins, it’s imperative to eat more proteins to prevent hair loss and keep the hair strong and healthy. Eggs, lentils, beans, meat and poultry all contain protein, so, perhaps, it’s time to up on the proteins and reduce the junk food in your diet.
Reduce the fatty and oily foods in your diet and replace with more healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and lentils. Reduce the amount of salt you consume as well. You’ll notice the change in your hair almost immediately, once you change your diet. They will become healthier and fall less.
Qatar has a great selection of 'Made in Qatar' vegetables and fruits available in all leading supermarkets across the company that are organic and fresh from the farms of Qatar.
Most of us don’t drink enough water, and water is very important to keep your scalp and hair healthy. You should drink, at least, eight glasses of water a day as part of your healthy diet and to ensure your hair and your skin are hydrated. The more hydrated your hair is, the healthier it will be.
In addition to the heat of Qatar, your hair can be damaged by excessive use of hairdryers, straighteners and other such products because the heat makes your hair drier, more brittle and fragile. Try to dry your hair as naturally as possible and whenever you can to prevent hair damage that will, ultimately, lead to hair loss!
Note: In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Qatar, it's best to call before you visit, because while some hospitals and clinics are offering virtual / online consultations, some clinics are closed, except for essential medical problems.
