A six-nation Eid al-Fitr Cricket Tournament will be held at the Asian Town cricket stadium on the outskirts of the Industrial Area on the first two days of the festival.
Informing this at a meeting chaired by the Ministry of Interior (MoI)’s director of Public Relations Col Abdulla Khalifa al-Muftah, the cricket tournament’s organising committee chairman Azeem Abbas said the six teams will represent Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The Qatar team will comprise members of different expatriate communities in the country.
The matches will be played in a 15-over-a-side format between 3pm and 10pm.
The Indian and Pakistani teams have been given direct entry into the semifinals.
The first day will see Sri Lanka take on Nepal and Qatar play against Bangladesh. The winners of the Sri Lanka-Nepal match will meet Pakistan in the first semifinal, to be held on the same day.
On Day 2, the second semifinal will be played between the winners of the Qatar-Bangladesh match and India. The tournament’s final will also be held that day.
The winners will receive a cash award of QR5,000 and a trophy from the MoI while the runners-up will get QR3,000 and a cup from the ministry.
The other teams will get QR2,000 each, besides a participation trophy.
Only those with a valid Qatari RP will be able to represent the participating teams.
A number of “surprise” awards await members of the audience, said Abbas.
Gul Mohamed Khan is the tournament director while Syed Ali will be in charge of the entry gates and security at the venue.
