Qatar's handball team earns another Gold Medal

Qatar Handball Gold Medal

Team Qatar’s handball team clinched their second Asian Games title today, winning a gold medal after defeating Bahrain 32-27. Team Qatar remained unbeaten for 7 matches throughout their journey to the Asian Games 2018 finals. Team Qatar knocked out Bahrain earlier this year at the 2018 Asian Handball Championship final in South Korea, winning the title for the third consecutive year.

A strong 18-member squad started their Asian Games 2018 competitions against Malaysia, winning with a score of 64-11. The team was drawn in Group A together with Malaysia and Iran who Team Qatar also defeated 35-20 in the preliminary round.

Qatar’s Handball Federation President Mr. Ahmed Al Shaabi dedicated Qatar’s Asian Handball Championship title to HH the Emir Sheikh Tamimi bin Hamad Al Thani and said:

“I offer my huge congratulations to each and every player and member of the national team. I would like to thank all the athletes for putting an amazing performance given the short period we had to prepare. Congratulations on a well deserved win!”

Team Qatar registered a 71 percent scoring efficiency. Bahrain led 14-13 at half time while Team Qatar led 12-11 in the second half. The teams played extra time and the game ended with Team Qatar scoring 7 to 2 against Bahrain. Anis Zouaoui was named the star player for Team Qatar, he scored an amazing 7 goals.

Commenting on the team’s effort and deserved win, Team Qatar’s Ahmad Madadi said:

““It wasn’t an easy game, we played against a very strong team. We did what it took to keep up with the score and played until our last breath. Today, also happens to be my birthday and it is a great way to celebrate with a gold medal.”

Four years ago, Team Qatar found their way to the final and won the Asian Games 2014 title after defeating South Korea in Inchon 2014. The following year, Team Qatar secured a silver medal in front of a home crown at the 2015 World Men’s Handball Championships in Doha. The team is looking ahead to 2019 World Men’s Handball Championship which will be hosted in Germany and Denmark in January 2019.
