The FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS QATAR GRAND PRIX 2023 is less than 40 days away. Lusail International Circuit (LIC) is set to welcome teams and fans from across the globe for an unforgettable weekend. The event is scheduled to take place across three days from 6th - 8th October 2023.
The new state-of-the-art circuit will host the Grand Prix in the sprint race format - happening for the first time in Qatar. LIC along with circuits in Azerbaijan, Belgium, Austria, Brazil and the United States were selected to host sprint races this year.
The race takes place on Saturday and is a completely independent event from the Grand Prix. The qualifying round on Friday determines the grid position of the drivers for the final race taking place on Sunday.
The sprint race is a 100km high intensity dash introduced to feature the best FORMULA 1 has to offer. The rigorous race has a great incentive for the drivers as they push their limits and give it their all to gain as many points as possible. The points secured by top 8 drivers are added to their overall score in pursuit of the world championship.
Another interesting feature of the format is time. The shorter format leaves fans cheering with excitement and anticipation. The times for each quarter have been decreased so the competition is fierce, and teams bring on their best strategies to tackle the challenge.
Quarter 1 will be 12 minutes, Quarter 2, 10 minutes, and finally, Quarter 3 will be 8 minutes instead of being 18 minutes, 15 minutes, and 12 minutes traditionally.
Sprint Race has its own qualifying session called the Sprint Shootout which will decide who gets placed closer to the grid line in the upcoming race.
