Nasser al attiyah wins portuguese rally leads 2024 world championship cover image

Qatari driver Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah took the lead in the overall standings of the 2024 World Cross Country Rally Championship (W2RC) after being crowned with the title of the International Rally of Portugal, which constitutes the third round of the world championship, despite coming in second in the fifth and final stage of the rally on 7 April 2024.

Al Attiyah, accompanied by his French navigator Edouard Boulanger, riding a “Hunter Prodrive” car, won the Portuguese Rally title after he took first place in the overall standings with a total time of 10.02.57 hours, 2.49 minutes behind his closest competitor, the Portuguese Joao Ferreira, who ranked second with a total time of 10.05.46 hours.

Brazilian driver Lucas Moraes ranked third with a total time of 10.06.33 hours, while Spanish driver Carlos Sainz came in fourth place with a total time of 10.09.09 hours, while Saudi driver Yazid Al Rajhi completed the list of top five places with a time of 10.20.08 hours.

By winning the Portuguese Rally, Al-Attiyah topped the overall standings of the World Long-Distance Cross-Country Rally Championship and took a big step towards crowning the championship title for the third season in a row after raising his number of points to 112 points and advancing to first place at the expense of Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who fell to second place with 100 points, while Saudi Yazid Al Rajhi advanced to third place with 79 points.

As for the fifth and final stage of the Portuguese Rally, Al-Attiyah, accompanied by his French navigator Edouard Boulanger, riding a “Hunter Prodrive” car, took second place in the 105-km special stage, which was held in the city of Grandola, after recording a time of 50 minutes and 8 seconds. This is only 12 seconds behind Brazilian driver Lucas Moraes, who won the stage title after occupying first place with a time of 49 minutes and 56 seconds, while Portuguese driver Joao Ferreira came in third place with a time of 50 minutes and 16 seconds.

It is worth noting that the 2024 World Cross-Country Rally Championship this season consists of five rounds, with two rounds remaining in the world championship, which are the Argentine Rally from June 1 to 7, and the Morocco Rally from October 5 to 11, 2024.
