Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) hosted the three-part International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) exams for the first time in the Middle East.

These exams have attracted 45 candidates from different countries including Mexico, Ecuador, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and others, which is the highest number of candidates compared to other exams conducted previously in Mexico and Chile.

Dr. Huda Al Naemi, Executive Director of Occupational Health and Safety Department, HMC, and President of Middle East Federation of Medical Physics (MEFOMP), said that 15 medical physicists of HMC did the exam, that concluded on Thursday, which was an important opportunity for them to obtain the IMPCB in their field without needing to travel outside Qatar to complete the study and exam. She explained that applying for the American Board Certificate in this specialization requires permanent residency in the U.S.

A two-day medical physics workshop was conducted as continuous professional education for medical staff. The examination is conducted by a team of seven IMPCB examining faculty selected by the Board Examination Committee.

The competencies of medical physicists applying for the exam varied in three areas: radiation therapy, medical radiation diagnosis, and nuclear medicine.

The team of medical physicists at HMC performs several scientific tasks aimed at improving quality in the field of medical diagnostics and radiotherapy. The physicist's work aims to protect radiation workers and the public from overexposure to radiation, as well as work on the safety of patients from excessive or unexplained exposures.
