DOHA: Used cars displayed in showrooms along Salwa road have posted a 20 percent growth in sales last month. Managers of showrooms told an Arabic daily that Toyota and Nissan used cars are the ones which were having brisk sales because these have been mostly patronised by Qataris and expatriates alike. Ahmed Al Sabai, a manager in one of the showrooms, expects that the demand of these automobiles will continue until May this year at the end of school year and the onset of summer season. Most Qataris prefer high-end used cars of these brands normally sold from QR80,000 to QR100,000 while other practical-minded expatriates would choose cheap yet still in excellent condition used cars sold at around QR15,000. Al Sabai asked banks to allow customers to avail of easy loans when they intend to buy used cars since this would also help in the economic growth of the country. He expects many Qatari government workers who benefited from the hefty salary increase late last year would follow the emerging trend of used cars intended to customise it into a special kind of model. Another showroom manager, Majidy Fathy, said the sales boom were seen on the more durable car brands since many practical car users find its stability a big factor if ever they would sell it again. He said customers don’t need to get a large loan when they prefer buying used cars and they won’t even have a hard time if they want to resell it. While there was positive sales growth last month, Fathy said they are still affected by the ongoing road works along Salwa Road which have made it hard for many businesses there in the last three and a half years.
