Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority Unique Designs To Ensure Great Competition And Exceptional Atmosphere In Doha Teams Getting Ready For The Challenge At The 1st Red Bull Flugtag Qatar Predator and polar birds, wild and marine animals or other symbolic ones, agile insects, old planes, fast cars, geometrical aerodynamic shapes… these are few of the aircraft designs that will compete at the 1st Red Bull Flugtag Qatar to be held at of the Museum of Islamic Art Park and aired exclusively on Qatar Television on 1 November 2013, under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority. This unique event is organized in collaboration with Ford, as one of the main sponsors, Innovations Unlimited ME, the event management agency, Qatar Museums Authority and the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), as the host of the venue, Qatar TV as the official TV partner, and Qatar Tribune and Al Watan as the official print media. It consists of flying machines designed in creative shapes, competing to fly without any engine, i.e. exclusively human’-powered. Selected teams have started to build their designs as a concrete translation of their previous sketches. Those flying machines will have to amaze and entertain the crowd and try to accomplish the longest flying distance before landing in the water. Ford, as part of the collaboration and in the spirit of the competition at the 1st Red Bull Flugtag Qatar, will sponsor a team that builds a flying machine in the image of an iconic Ford car. “The challenge for the team will be to follow an open design brief and create the flying icon.” Said Paul Anderson, marketing director at Ford Middle East. “Ford will follow the team’s creative progress by ‘time-lapse’ photography, from design stage to final creation, and will also provide them with expert advice with its go-pros who will document the build journey.” Teams should consist of a pilot and 3 assistants, and will abide by Red Bull Flugtag rules as to the maximum weight of the flying machine with the pilot not exceeding 180kg, and a maximum length of 8m. At the same time, the use of any engine or source of propulsion is forbidden and the team shall only depend on human force. Performances will be evaluated upon 3 main factors: creativity of the craft, showmanship and flight distance. The pilot has to jump from a 6m high platform and fly for as far as possible (5 pts/m), however, teams who long to the title will have to creatively design and build an aircraft that will appeal to the jury, and, before the take-off and landing in the water, will present a 60-second show to entertain both the public and the panel. The first Red Bull Flugtag was launched in Vienna, Austria in 1992, and since then, than 100 Flugtag events were organized around the world. Who will be able to take the longest flight in Doha and grab the crowd and jury’s attention?
