QATAR and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights yesterday signed a convention on headquarters of the UN Centre for Training and Documentation in Human Rights for West Asia and the Arab region. The signing ceremony was held at the Foreign Ministry in Doha yesterday. HE Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs signed the convention for the government of Qatar while it was signed for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by Kyung Waha, the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, currently visiting Doha. The centre was established as per the UN General Assembly resolution number 153 adopted at its 60th session. The centre aims at enhancing co-operation with the world’s governments for promoting human rights related policies and principles through training, media, documentation and exchange of expertise. The center also aims to enhance and strengthen the capabilities of the governmental institutions and agencies concerned with justice with a view to promoting and protecting human rights as well as supporting the national human rights institutions and the civil society organisations, plus disseminating the human rights-related education programmes and integrating human rights concepts into programmes of the UN agencies. Qatar hosts the centre, which will be under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. The centre’s geographic area will cover the South-West Asia and the Arab region and it is expected to begin its activities in the near future. QNA
