Two Syrians have been fined QR3,000 each for “stealing sand” from the Sealine dunes. They were caught when an officer saw them “loading the sand on to a pickup” on May 27 last year. The duo, both aged 29, denied the charges saying that they went to the area to deliver tyres to someone. The accused failed to attend the trial and the sentence was given in absentia. The law in Qatar imposes a penalty of up to six months in jail or a fine up to QR6,000 on anyone who benefits from public property without the consent of the authorities. Explaining the conviction, the judge said that he found the officer’s report on the incident “reliable.” The two convicts could appeal the decision. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=332940&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
