Writing is a skill that is developed with practice and, sometimes, you end up writing something that you want to share or have published. It is difficult to get published almost anywhere as each publisher is looking for something different, but that doesn't mean that people should stop trying.

In Qatar, writing, reading and knowledge have always been a core value to carry on for generations. This is why it is important to be able to publish people’s work from across the Middle East, to further knowledge and understanding of the region.

Here is a list of three places in Qatar where you can publish books or academic materials.

1. Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Press

Established in 2010, the HBKU Press aims to “promote the love of reading and writing by helping to establish a vibrant scholarly and literary culture in Qatar and the Middle East.” They publish fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children. Alongside this, they publish academic and reference material for schools and they also translate books from across the world. The majority of the books are in either Arabic or English.

HBKU Press has a workflow which is responsive, and keeps the authors continuously informed and up-to-date throughout the publishing process. It is also responsible for ensuring the research publication is provided the widest possible dissemination and distribution. There are a few conditions that apply to individual works, for example, academic papers and articles are expected to be published on the website Qscience.com free for the public.

Here are some of the benefits you can acquire through publishing with them:

  • Authors will keep full copyright of their work through the Creative Commons license.
  • The editing of articles will be done by experts in the field of research.
  • The work will be peer reviewed rigidly to ensure its quality.
  • The work will be preserved and archived.
  • The opportunity to work with a highly experienced publishing team.

What is also great about this publication is their open access approach for distribution. Since they are featured in multiple book fairs around the world, it allows local and Middle Eastern authors to gain more exposure. Check out their website and begin contacting them through their E-mail below.

Through a fund or a voucher, academic writers can have the chance to be featured in one of the Open Access Journals. QNL offers an Open Access Author Fund where the Library will be responsible for paying the article processing fees. For the Open Access vouchers, the Library’s voucher vendors will give vouchers to authors deemed eligible in order to help get them published in one of their Open Access journals.

This initiative was put into place to support Qatar-based research and is open to students, faculty, researchers and staff from any higher education institute. You can start applying for the fund through filling out the request form.
