Food inspectors from the Doha Municipality have ordered at least six restaurants across the city to down their shutters temporarily for violating health and safety rules. The violations were detected as part of the municipality’s routine raids on eating outlets, bakeries, foodstuff stores and beauty salons to check if they conformed to the strict civic health and safety guidelines. The municipality issues statistics at the end of every month of the raids it has conducted and action taken against erring businesses. Last month, for instance, more than 3,200 raids were conducted on restaurants, cafes, bakeries, foodstuff outlets and beauty salons in the city and warnings were issued to around 99 for violating rules. The municipality had to destroy some 270 tonnes of various food stocks which had expired and forwarded at least 80 samples of food items to the laboratory for quality tests. Among the items destroyed were 3,700 crates of rotten eggs and 510 packets of cigarettes. Around 410 violations detected by the public cleaning officials were referred to the police for legal action. http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=December2008&file=Local_News2008122651218.xml
