Qatar is building the world’s largest water reservoirs to stock the precious utility for emergency, with a total capacity of 160 million imperial gallons — enough to fill up 300 giant, Olympic Games-size swimming pools.

The 18 existing reservoirs in Doha are being demolished for reconstruction, said Mohamed Salem Al Mansoori, Head, Water Projects, Kahramaa, the utility distributor.

Once completed, they will be the world’s largest concrete potable water reservoirs, Al Mansoori told a MEED conference here recently.

He said some two million cubic metres of cement will be used in making the reservoirs and the project will cover 600km of pipelines of 900mm to 1,600mm diameter.

Between now and 2018, three reservoir pumping stations will be built in Mekeines (on the outskirts of Doha), Zikrit and Hazm Abal Jihh, with a total capacity of 18 million imperial gallons.

Al Mansoori said 40km of transmission pipelines will be installed during this period.

The reservoirs have been designed to keep the water fit for human consumption all the time by keeping it fresh using circulation pumps and chlorination. Supplies will comply with World Health Organisation and local standards, Al Mansoori said in a statement yesterday.
