The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will perform Benjamin Britten’s “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” opus 34, in a family concert on April 29, at 6pm at the Aspire Hall in the Ladies Club at the Aspire complex. The orchestra will be conducted by Massimiliano Stefanelli, who also directed QPO’s last concert. “One of Britten’s best known works, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ was composed in 1946 to accompany ‘Instruments of the Orchestra,’ an educational film produced by BBC. Subtitled ‘Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell,’ its theme is a melody from Henry Purcell’s “Abdelazar,” a spokesperson explained. ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ is one of the best-known pieces by the composer and is among the three popularly-used scores in children’s music education, she claimed, adding “Britten’s technique, broad musical and human sympathies, and ability to treat the most traditional of musical forms with freshness and originality place him at the head of composers of his generation.” Tickets for the concert are priced at QR75 for adults and QR25 for children, and can be obtained at Aspire Ladies Club and at City Center. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=287145&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
