Doha • Qatar requires an estimated 5,000 qualified teachers at various levels in the next five years, said Professor Hissa Mohd Sadiq, Dean, College of Education, Qatar University, yesterday. Talking to The Peninsula, Dr Hissa said QU has lined up a series of programmes to increase the number of qualified teachers in the country in the coming years. The university has already announced its decision to start a higher diploma course in teaching. “To meet the future demands in the next three years, Qatar really needs a large number of qualified teachers. The General Secretariat for Developmental Planning has projected a need for at least 5,000 qualified teachers during the next five years", she said. Sabah Al Haidous, Director, Education Institute, Supreme Education Council (SEC), said Qatar was really facing a challenge in getting the required number of qualified teachers. A random survey conducted by the SEC had found that the country is in need of a large number of qualified teachers, and other professional experts in the education sector. “Of late, we have managed to attract a good number of teachers by offering high incentives and perks. But we are still in need of more qualified hands", she said.
