Qatar is “the most appropriate place in the Gulf” to host the Qatar Law Forum which was officially opened by the country’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani last night, according to the forum’s co-convenor the right honourable Lord Woolf of Barnes. Lord Woolf spoke to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the conference, where he said he believed that Qatar “shares a commitment to the principles that the conference is seeking to promote.” “Qatar combines the traditional approach of a Middle East state with a contemporary outlook,” he said, adding that the obvious interest shown in the subjects up for discussion was an indication of this point of view. “I have been to a great many forums and I really do believe that the breadth of the people who are here is unsurpassed,” he claimed, adding “Qatar can take great satisfaction in this – as the QFC Civil and Commercial Court does.” He also argued that the forum has provided a bridge for the Qatari domestic and commercial courts to co-operate, something he said was very important. Head of McNair Chambers, Khawar Qureshi QC echoed Lord Woolf’s sentiments and emphasised the importance of the Qatar Law Forum for the development of the legal profession in Qatar. http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=294132&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
