PMs chair talks; clean energy accord signed

A ROUND of official talks between Qatar and Britain was led by Premier and Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the Emiri Diwan yesterday. The talks were attended by HE Yousef Hussein Kamal, Minister of Economy and Finance , HE Sheikh Fahd bin Jassim bin Mohamed al-Thani, Minister of Business and Trade, HE Abdullah bin Eid al-Sulaiti, acting director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Adel Ali al-Khal, Director of the European and American Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, Khalid bin Rashid al-Mansouri, Qatar’s ambassador to Britain, and Mansour Ibrahim al-Mahmoud, director of the Qatar Investment Authority chairman’s office. Attending on the British side were John Hawkins, ambassador to Qatar, Simon McDonald, Brown’s foreign policy adviser, Stewart Wood, his special adviser, and Tom Flitcher, special secretary for foreign affairs. The officials reviewed ties of co-operation between the two countries and discussed regional and international issues of joint interest. The two premiers then witnessed the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between Qatar Investment Authority and Britain for investment in clean energy technologies. The agreement was signed by Mansour Ibrahim al-Mahmoud and Tom Delay, CEO of the Carbon Trust Company. The partnership includes two basic elements: a Qatari-British fund with a capital of £250mn dedicated to clean energy technologies and research, and an agreement on technology transfer for lowering carbon dioxide levels in the air. The fund will be operated by QIA and the Carbon Trust Company, with QIA allocating £150mn to it. l HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani received Brown and his accompanying delegation at Al Wajbah Palace last night. Talks during the meeting dealt with ties of co-operation between the two countries and ways of boosting them in all fields . The two sides also discussed other issues of common interest. The meeting was attended by HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani, HE Abdulrahman bin Saud al-Thani, Chief of the Emiri Diwan, HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Director of the Emir’s Office, HE Saad bin Mohamed al-Rumaihi, Secretary of the Emir For Follow-Up Affairs, al-Khal of the Foreign Ministry, and the two countries’ ambassadors. The Emir then hosted a dinner banquet in honour of the visitors. Brown arrived in Doha yesterday afternoon on a two-day visit. The British premier and his accompanying delegation were welcomed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Cabinet member HE Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud, Ambassador al-Mansouri and Chief of Protocol at the Premier’s office Ahmed Jassem al-Mulla. - QNA
