Overwhelming response to Vodafone’s Internship programme

Students present during the ‘Study Break’ session with Vodafone Qatar CEO Grahame Maher yesterday expressed keen interest in joining the Winter Internship Programme of the telecom company. “The enthusiasm of the students about Vodafone is overwhelming,” said Rachel Laws, Head of Culture and Leadership at Vodafone. This is the second time that Vodafone is offering an internship programme for Education City students who demonstrate interest in working in the company. The internship programme will be four-weeks-long within the months of December and January, two weeks shorter than the Summer Internship Programme. Being a paid internship programme, students who would qualify would receive QR5,000 for the month-long duration of the programme which will provide them adequate training for the projects they would be delegated in. “There are eight available projects in line with a number of areas such as human resources, data analysis, campaign management, finance and technology,” said Amro Rashad, Head of Re-sourcing and Learning. Rashad also introduced their upcoming Graduate Recruitment Programme which will grant a deserving candidate 12-month job stint with Vodafone, during which he would work on three to four projects. “Evaluation will be conducted at the end of the term which would determine whether the candidate would stay further as a regular employee,” he explained. Discussing how Vodafone is able to recruit the right people for the job, Grahame Maher said they look into three important things namely talent, experience and values to determine an applicant’s fitness for the job. Maher said from its inception, Vodafone Qatar has aimed at making a world of difference for the people of Qatar; hence the company upholds certain values such as simplicity, trust, vitality and global outlook essential for the diversity of population of Qatar. He revealed that Vodafone alone is composed of employees from 40 countries. Maher emphasized the uniqueness of their organisation which focuses on collaborative work rather than hierarchical, giving workers more freedom to be creative and productive. Fatima Bahja, a Vodafone employee, who was a product of the internship programme expressed contentment having been employed as a marketing specialist, quite a departure from her original course which was International Politics. She lauded the healthy working environment offers more opportunity for collaboration and encourages commitment among the employees.
