he next concert in the Qatar Foundation concert series, in association with Qatar Shell, will take place on November 17 at 7.30pm at the Qatar Academy auditorium in Education City. Young British clarinettist Sarah Williamson, accompanied by pianist John Reid, is to perform. This will be the second time Sarah has performed in Doha. In 2002 she toured the Middle East along with other finalists who had won prizes in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Having shown great musical promise at an early age, Sarah won a scholarship at the age of 15 to the Purcell School of Music in London, in addition to attending the junior department of the Royal Academy of Music. In 2001 she began to establish a name for herself by winning the Shell LSO Gerald McDonald Award and the Arthur Bulgin Medal, awarded to her by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. She continued her advanced studies in Paris with Pascal Maragues, principal clarinettist with the Orchestre de Paris at Le Conservatoire Superieur de Musique de Paris. Since graduating, Sarah has toured extensively throughout the UK and abroad, having performed in the US, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “Sarah will perform a series of works which are both varied and demanding and will demonstrate the immense technical prowess which she possesses as a clarinettist and at the same time, underline her close affinity to a wide range of compositional styles,” QF concert organiser Steve Griffiths. Opening the recital will be the expansive Grand Duo Concertante by Weber, followed by the light-hearted Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano by Joseph Horowitz. The climax of the recital will be the intensely demanding Sonata in F minor by Brahms followed by the popular and virtuoso showpiece, Themes on La Traviata by Verdi. A graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, John Reid is an experienced and highly regarded accompanist who has partnered such eminent musicians as William Bennett, Joan Rogers, Alison Balsam, Alexander Baillie and Jennifer Pike. Tickets for this Celebrity Clarinet Recital cost QR50 each and can be obtained from QF PR and marketing department (telephone 4540950, 4548160 or 5223073) http://gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=325376&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
