DOHA • The Upper Criminal Court on Thursday heard a case involving an American student living in Qatar accused of allegedly killing a pedestrian in a road accident on Salwa Road a few months ago.
The accident occurred late in the night near the Khamis-Juma Roundabout on Salwa Road.
The student was coming from Aziziya roundabout towards Doha city, a key witness from the Mamoura Traffic Department told the court.
The student has been accused of speeding, which eventually led to the death of the pedestrian who was trying to cross the highway, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday.
The accused denied the charges. The witness from the traffic department told the court the area was known for its traffic jams and the student had crossed the permitted speed limit, which, he said, was 50-60 kmph. However, he couldn't specify the exact speed of the car at the time of the accident.
The witness said the speeding car hit the pedestrian, as he was crossing the highway from south to north. The car was moving on the right lane at the time of the accident.
The court then sought comments from the accused. He said he had a seen the signboard on the road showing the permitted maximum speed limit as 100 kmph.
However, when asked about the speed of his car at the time of the accident, he said he was moving at 110 kmph. He said he tried to slow down when he saw the pedestrian entering on to the road but failed in the attempt.
The court adjourned the case until June 5 to give time for the victim's family to present the necessary documents to claiming blood money, the paper said.
