In a Tweet today, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid announced his country's decision to restore full diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar. The minister also added that the decision came after 'fruitful' discussions with the Qatari authorities. The Tweet mentioned that the Maldives welcomes the positive developments following the GCC Summit.
Maldives welcomes the positive developments following the annual summit of Gulf Cooperation Council. I have had fruitful discussions with the #Qatari authorities and am pleased to announce Government of #Maldives decision to reinstate full diplomatic relations with Qatar.

This announcement comes after a successful 41st GCC Summit on 5 January, 2021 in Saudi Arabia. On 5 June 2017, in solidarity with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, Maldives decided to sever ties with Qatar which have now been restored.
