The Soorya India Festival will be held on Wednesday (November 30) at Gulf Cinema from 8pm under the auspices of Saarang Doha and Soorya. The event includes a santoor recital by Dr Varsha Agarwal, mohiniyattam by Gopika Varma and odissi by Malabika, Isha and Lopamudra. Dr Agarwal, who will be accompanied by Asit Goswamy on the sitar and Pandit Lalit Mohant on the tabla, is the only female artiste from India who has received international recognition for her brilliant performance on Santoor. She has polished her art by strenuous training and ‘Riyaz’. At present Dr Agarwal is the ‘Gandabandh’ disciple of renowned Santoor player, Padmashri Pandit Bhajan Sopori. The santoor is an ancient stringed musical instrument, native to Kashmir and Iran. Entry passes could be requested by contacting 55519754 or 55682848. Gulf Times
