The foundation stone for one of Qatar’s biggest energy projects, the Ras Girtas, will be laid today in Ras Laffan. The Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), along with the consortium partners, is all set to implement the largest power generation and water desalination project in Qatar. The facility will be owned and operated by Ras Girtas Power Company (RGPC). The project is estimated to cost around QR14bn and will have capacity of 2,730 MW of power generation and 63 MIGD of water. The project’s capacity base has been increased from the earlier envisaged 2,600 MW of power generation and 55 MIGD of water. Qatar signed last year a series of deals to build the QR14bn ($3.8bn) desalination and power plant. The facility will be completed in 2011 and will be owned and operated by Ras Girtas Power Company (RGPC) and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), will purchase the power and water from the plant. The Ras Girtas Power Company is jointly owned by the Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) (45 percent), a consortium of Japan’s Mitsui and France’s Suez Energy International (40 percent) and Qatar Petroleum (15 percent). http://thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_News&subsection=Qatar+News&month=May2009&file=Local_News200905043571.xml
