Al Jazeera reported on 12 February 2024 that the eight former Indian naval officers who had received death sentences for charges of spying on Qatar on behalf of Israel have now been released.

No further information has been provided regarding their arrest, sentencing, and commuting.

The eight officers were employed at a company that was advising on a Qatari programme which was looking to get high-tech Italian-made submarines, and they were arrested in late August 2022 due to findings of evidence that information had been passed on to Israeli intelligence.

There were various hearings for the case, and reports of court appeals to change the death sentence to varying prison sentences.

As per Al Jazeera, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that 7 of the men have already returned to India; however, there are no details yet regarding the 8th person involved.

Reportedly, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had appreciated H.H. the Amir's decision to release and allow these individuals to return back to India.
