Qatar Airways flight QR1409 - a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner - flying from Doha to Lagos, faced a minor technical malfunction on Thursday 21 February which was reported as the plane was flying over Ethiopia. As a result, the flight was diverted to Khartoum and the plane landed safely at Khartoum Airport at 3:20 pm (standard Qatari time).
According to Qatar Airways, the route diversion of its flight number QR1409 to Khartoum was a preventive and routine action that is usually taken under such circumstances.
Qatar Airways has always stressed that passenger safety is its biggest priority, and that is why it prepared a separate flight from Doha to Lagos (QR1234) which took off en route to Lagos at 6:43 pm (standard Qatari time) with the aim that passengers originally travelling to Lagos on QR1409, reach their destination with a delay of just three hours and 23 minutes.
Qatar Airways has denied suggestions of some international media outlets that passengers on its flight from Doha to Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday, survived a disaster due to a technical malfunction. It requested media outlets to research and investigate news accuracy before reporting it to the public.
