FIFA, football’s world governing body, has threatened Qatar Football Association with sanctions if it is found to have been involved in Mohamed Bin Hammam’s possible interference in the Asian Football Confederation’s presidential election.
Kuwait Football Association has raised concerns with FIFA over the presence of bin Hammam's associates at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, where an election for a new leader will be held on Thursday.
Bin Hammam, a Qatari, was banned for life from any association with the football code in 2012 after FIFA found him guilty of corruption and bribery.
FIFA deputy secretary general Markus Kattner sent a letter to Qatar Football Association general secretary Saoud Al-Mohannadi warning the organisation to stay away from Bin Hammam.
"We would like to turn your attention to the fact that this lifetime ban from all football related activity imposed on Mr. Bin Hammam specifically prohibits any member or employee of the football family (e.g. member associations, officials etc.) to contact or meet with Mr. Bin Hammam regarding any football related issues," the letter reportedly says.
"In the event Mr. Bin Hammam should visit, attend or meet various AFC members or AFC member associations in order to support specific candidates around the upcoming AFC elections, this would cause a clear and serious breach of the sanction imposed on Mr. Bin Hammam.”
"...anyone who fails to comply with a decision passed by a body, a committee or an instance of FIFA, may be sanctioned."
Two of the four candidates in Thursday’s election – the UAE’s Yousuf Al Serkal and Thailand’s Worawi Makudi - are known Bin Hammam allies.
The other two candidates are Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Saudi Arabia's Hafez Ibrahim Al Medlej.
