If you’re in the mood for Japanese, but also in the mood for Arabic food and you can’t pick what you’d rather have, then you should head over to Cactus Senshi - a new restaurant that combines Asian and Arabic flavors to make a delicious and unique fusion.

ILQ tried out Cactus Senshi’s innovative menu and enjoyed their fabulous dishes. For sushi-lovers, you can find both original Japanese rolls, such as maki, nigiri and sashimi, as well as fusion uramaki rolls.

Cactus Senshi is located in Shoumoukh Towers on C-ring road in Fereej bin Mahmoud. They open from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the afternoon, and then 6:00 pm to 11:30 pm in the evening.

Chief Operating Officer Mark Boreham, the brain behind the concept, has spent the last 15 years as a chef in the UK, he has worked as an executive chef in 5-star hotels and as head chef with a Michelin star restaurant (source: QTchillout).

“I wanted to be the first to create a product, which the local market and country could claim to be its origin. We still have all of the usual sushi favorites but we to refine them where possible,” Boreham said.

Cactus Senshi has been the recent hot button topic of the town, with lots of people going to visit and try out their restaurant and interesting fusion cuisine.

To start off our appetizers we had the Duck Gyoza and the Chicken Yakitori, which are basically teriyaki flavored chicken skewers. Both dishes were delicious! The Chicken Yakitori was super tender and juicy and the teriyaki flavor really gave it a nice smoky taste. The Duck Gyoza is very similar to dumplings and came with ponzu sauce, which is a tangy, soy-based sauce.

For sushi, we tried the Shrimp Biryani and Daoud Basha rolls from their Arabic uramaki section, and their traditional Tempura Soft Shell Crab maki roll and Prawn hosomaki roll. The Arabic rolls were very interesting. Surprisingly, the rolls were cold, and I expected them to be warm since I’m used to eating shrimp biryani hot.

Overall, they were pretty good. I personally liked the Shrimp Biryani roll better than the Daoud Basha roll since it has braised beef in it, and I’m not a big fan of meat, particularly in my sushi. But for meat-lovers it might just be something you end up falling in love with! The Tempura Soft Shell Crab roll was pretty tasty too, and the Prawn hosomaki was also something a little different than what I’m used to, but in a good way.

My absolute favorite dish however, was their dessert! We ordered their Matcha Green Tea Crepes, which came with homemade milk ice cream. Wow. It was so yummy, and not even super sweet! The green tea flavor complemented the sweetness of the ice cream so well! If you visit, you should definitely try out this dessert, as it’s also something unique and can’t really be found anywhere else in Doha.

They also offer a number of other dishes, such as noodles, rice, and curries, which all incorporate a distinct taste of different Asian cultures (Thai, Indonesian, etc.). Would I go back and try out more of their items? Definitely.
