Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) has launched a competition for aspiring authors in Qatar and Kuwait, who are invited to submit a short story in English or Arabic to the editors of BQFP. The winner of the best short story will see their work published on the BQFP website, receive a year’s worth of BQFP books, and have the chance to meet a BQFP editor to discuss their writing aspirations.

Entrants are invited to write about an object which is of particular significance to them. This theme is inspired by BQFP author Mai Al-Nakib and her collection of short stories The Hidden Light of Objects. A sample of her stories can be read on www.bloomsbury.com.

The competition is open for entries in Qatar and Kuwait until the 23^rd of July 2014. The short stories should be between 800-2000 words, in English or in Arabic and must be submitted to [email protected]

BQFP Head of English Publishing, Thalia Suzuma, said:

‘BQFP publishes authors of excellence from throughout the Arabic world and we are proud of our richly diverse list. We are also keen to promote up-and-coming voices from within the region and we are constantly looking for the writers of tomorrow. From within the submissions, I will be eagerly looking out for anyone with a fresh, original voice that really stands out from the crowd. We are equally interested in writers who choose to express themselves in either Arabic or English; what matters is their command of language and their ability to express themselves in a striking way.’
