DOHA: About 158,000 students in Qatar will return to their classes today after a long summer vacation. Among them, about 81,000 students belong to Independent schools. However, teaching and non-teaching staff of Independent schools resumed work on September 7. Admissions for the new academic year 2011-12 have been successfully completed as per the planning of the Student’s Admission Committee at the Supreme Education Council (SEC). The SEC has taken measures to ensure parents do not have to face any problems this year in getting their kids hassle-free admission in the school of their choice. The parents were made available with more choices of schools in their neighbourhood for new admissions, so that they do not have to commute a long distance to reach schools. Several new mechanisms were adopted, this year so that the parents could be provided with more options and have the liberty to select the school of their choice. The SEC had made all the necessary arrangements so that no aspirants are denied admission. The booklet on standard syllabus has been distributed to all the independent schools in Qatar and has also been made available on SEC's official website. All the Independent schools in Qatar follow the national standard syllabus approved by the SEC. The syllabus includes Islamic Studies, Science, Mathematics, Arabic Language, English Language, Social Science, among other subjects. The school operators are busy holding meetings with their staff to ensure the smooth beginning of the new academic year. The Peninsula
