For aspiring programmers and tech-heads, the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs in-the-making may just be discovered at the upcoming CarnegieApps ‘Hackathon’. Slated to be held from January 27-28, 2017 at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a partner university of Qatar Foundation (QF), this annual programming competition will see university teams from across the GCC race against the clock to develop web and mobile applications and games in 24-hours of straight, non-stop programming.

The ‘Hackathon’ is organized by CarnegieApps, a student-run club at CMU-Q and will feature five categories of judging, including Best Technical Idea, Best Overall App, Best Design, Best Rookie Project and, a new category sponsored by Education Above All’s Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict.

Here, young forward thinkers will be challenged to explore creative ways in which technology can be used to protect schoolchildren in global conflict zones. Education Above All is a QF initiative founded by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser that aspires to bring quality, sustainable education to marginalized students in the developing world.

“We’re excited to continue the great tradition of ‘Hackathon’ here at CMU-Q, and we’re excited to host students from Qatar and across the region,” expressed Vishan Popat, President of CarnegieApps, and a Business Administration student at CMU-Q. The ‘Hackathon’ is part of CMU-Q’s support towards furthering the GCC’s Computer Science sector through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
