As part of its efforts to develop a positive road safety culture amongst Qatar’s youth, Students for Road Safety has visited Zekrit Primary Independent School for Girls in Doha, where students took part in a driving simulator training led by internationally accredited driving instructors.

The Students for Road Safety programme was launched in 2013 by programme owners Maersk Oil Qatar in partnership with the Qatar General Directorate of Traffic, within the Ministry of Interior, as part of the national One Second road safety brand.

The driving simulator used in the Students for Road Safety programme features cutting-edge technology, including a complete car cockpit and an advanced display system with a wrap-around screen. A custom-made artificial intelligence engine reflects common traffic behaviours on Qatar’s roads like tail-gating, failure to indicate, flashing lights and cutting across cars at roundabouts.

Last year alone, more than 5000 students aged between 12 and 18 have benefited from Students for Road Safety programme. The three day visit to Zekrit Primary Independent School for Girls, along with dozens of others by Students for Road Safety, are in addition to community and traffic events that all aim to transform students into road safety ambassadors, both at school and at home.

Mohammed Radi Al Hajri, Director, Media and Awareness at Traffic department said: ”The Students for Road Safety programme contributes significantly towards our efforts in improving road safety. This event was a great success, and helped to instil a culture of road safety by educating school students about road safety behaviours”

Al Hajri added: ”The Students for Road Safety programme is an important initiative to help raise awareness of road safety among the younger generations, and to help us in the traffic awareness division to involve the whole community through community engagement. We urge everyone to look at Maersk Oil Qatar as a great example of an organisation engaging with the community.” He also highlighted the high participation level among the students, which will qualify the students to be Road Safety Ambassadors in their communities.

Fatima Al Obaidly, Security and Safety Supervisor at Zekrit Primary Independent School for Girls said: “Our students loved the visit from Students for Road Safety and were clearly moved by the interactive sessions. Their experience in the state of the art road simulator with the experienced instructors also helped them see, with their own eyes, why it is so important to be vigilant while on the road.”
