Every Thursday, ILQ features a different Qatari startup in our ‘Startup of the Week’ segment. Qatar has some of the most creative, unique, and impactful startups in the region, and we cover them all across a variety of industries in Doha—from fashion and beauty, to food and dining, health, education, technology, and more!
This week, we're double tapping for Modaris—an app that connects students to home tutors in Qatar!
A data-driven connection platform, the biggest goal of the app is to help both students and the community. The Modaris team is proud to say that they've provided over 400 people with jobs that have, albeit slightly, contributed to the economy since their initial operations in October 2015.
Founded by Haitham Al-Haidari and Yasmin Kassem, Modaris started off as a simple online platform with a $200 budget put into it.
We've even featured them once on the same column more than 2 years ago when they were just a website.
Since then, the business has grown exponentially. After being awarded the 'Most Innovative Startup in Qatar in 2017' and being part of the top 3 of the IT Business Awards, Modaris is now the largest online platform for students and tutors in Qatar. It aspires to be the fastest and simplest resource to finding trainers and home-tutors in Qatar.
At the time of writing, Modaris is accumulating approximately 8000 users per month in Qatar. Moreover, students have booked tutors on their app and platform almost 4000 times.
The process of booking a tutor through Modaris takes less than a minute. Students can pick from a list of tutors based on their profiles, experience, or availability times. Tutors respond within a matter of hours. Both high school and university students can use Modaris to cater to their specifications.
The positive responses that the team is getting are what made Modaris come up with an app that's available both on IOS and Android.
They've been acknowledged by the government of Qatar as well as other big private entities such as Google, Aljazeera Media Network, and local and international investment firms.
When asked about her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs who also seek to establish their own startups in the future, co-founder Yasmin has this to say:
"Young entrepreneurs need to start soon and fast. Most first-startups fail, and that is ok. Entrepreneurs need to fail faster in order to reach their successful startups faster."
She continued by saying that tutors can offer their subjects on Modaris for as low as QR 99 a month. No commissions and no hidden fees.
Modaris was incubated at the Digital Incubation Center (DIC).
