Operations at the new Hamad Port will begin on December 24 with limited types of ships and cargoes, The Ministry of Transport said yesterday.
Once fully operational, Hamad Port’s capacity will be six million containers a year. It will be connected with other GCC countries through road, sea and rail networks, and this is an additional value for Qatar’s ports in general, said a statement.
The port will be able to handle 1.7 million tonnes of general goods, one million tonnes of food grains and 500,000 vehicles. It will also has a general cargo terminal, a multi-use terminal, an offshore supply base, a coast guard facility, and a port marine unit.
The port will also have a centralised customs area, a port administrative district, vessels inspecting platform, 110 m control tower, multiple maritime facilities, mosque, stocks, among other facilities. Hamad port will support economic diversification and improve the region’s competitiveness by transforming Qatar into a regional sea trading hub, said the ministry.
