As part of efforts to improve taxi services, the public transport company — Mowasalat — is to launch a new electronic application for Karwa taxis by this month-end to help drivers reach destinations easily, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

The GPS-enabled technology will not only help cabbies to take the shortest possible route to a destination but also save commuters’ time and money.

Newcomers — commuters and drivers — not aware of Qatar’s geography and places, often lose their way which cost passengers a lot of extra money and time.

Initially in the pilot phase, the application will be installed in about 100 cabs and will be eventually extended to the entire fleet of Karwa taxis over the next three months.

Though there is a shortage of taxi services, especially at vital places during peak hours, with the operation of several private taxi firms over the last couple of years, the competition in the sector has grown healthier, resulting in significant improvement in services in terms of quality, availability and reach.

Mowasalat also plans to increase the number of its fleet to more than 7,000 vehicles in the coming years, the daily added.
